
Skinner Butte has been a place to “mark” the city with powerful symbols
Sometimes these symbols united Eugene around a shared identity and other times they purposely divided and excluded people. The KKK prominently marked the side of Skinner Butte with a large KKK sign in the 1920s and later are suspected of being responsible for a series of lit crosses installed on the Butte.
